Recovering My Attention
Dec. 1st, 2023 09:38 amSince October 27 I have been experimenting with staying off the computer. So far, I have found if I do not use my desktop I sleep far better. My upper limit may be a max of 2 hours a day. Though that is pushing things. Two hours a few times a week is more likely what I can do. If I stay completely off the computer I do feel best.
Other devices. Too much time on the social media impacts the quality of my sleep. Which I have been accessing via my iPhone. So I switched to a flip phone with some smartphone functionality. Only been a few days but I feel a difference.
The bigger picture is encouraging. Some of my health problems are finally starting to resolve. The physical impact on my body when problem solving whether hardware support or programming appears to have been contributing towards stress on my physiological systems.
The biggest surprise has been in my attention and focus. I have for some time been fooling myself that I have been reading like I did as a kid or at least close to it.
Not even close. I noticed especially with cutting back on social media a big change in both my attention and reading comprehension. I can read more pages with less effort in a sitting and comprehend what I read better than I have been able to in 20 years.
Now, what to do about living in a world dominated by screens? I don’t see being able to do much writing for a blog. I am writing this post on my iPad and I am getting close to my limit for a session screen-wise.
Handwriting and OCR might help. I would like to explore the seminary offered by the Universal Gnostic Church. Not sure how that would go since it is all being done via Dreamwidth’s forum.
Maybe my path is destined to be walked silently?
